Illuminated streets, family atmosphere, music, Christmas shopping, and of course, the lottery. The Spanish Christmas Lottery or simply Lotería de Navidad is a national lottery. In the Spanish-speaking media it is sometimes just called El Gordo and is the second longest continuously running lottery in the world. The Christmas Lottery is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Spain. This is because in Spain it is not Santa Claus, who brings gifts to the children – it is the Three Magi on the 6th of January. Therefore Christmas Eve and Boxing Day are not so popular, as they are in other nations. However people in Tenerife and the rest of Spain still celebrate them. It is common to have a good dinner on Christmas Eve and then walk around the neighbourhood to greet and toast with all friends and acquaintances. The Boxing Day is then usually more quiet....
